My dear Smyly,
I hope you found a big
bundle of proofs awaiting you. We
have rather stuck recently, as I
have been spending some time wrestling
with 17.5.1 We have made csome
certain imprvements , and you will
I am afraid hardly recognise your
commentary now. The general
question of συγκρισις υπολογος etc
(about which I am sure we havent yet

got to the bottom of2) are going to
be postponed, but the text and notes
will be printed in a few days. We
have decided that it is impossible
to get the proofs of the whole vol.
printed before Jan 1 when we must
leave for Egypt. So we are only going
to get it printed & corrected up to
the end of the texts . The description,
appendices, indices and introduction
to 60 dealing with the general
questions of the land survery will
all be written , but not sent to the
press until we depart. Then we

shall be able to ^finally revise all the
proof when we return and yet
bring out the volume by the end of
April or May . So you neednt
trouble to send us any corrected
proofs till the end of November, as
we shant finish the texts till then.
Has Mahaffy received Amherst II
from Lord A ? If not, let him
write to me & I will communicate
with Lord A, who said he was going
to send M. one.

Yours ever
B.P.G.

1. A crocodile reference. Several papyri are associated with it, but he must mean P.Tebt. I 61.

2. 'of' cancelled in pencil, not the black ink used to write the text.
