You will be sorry to
hear that I think Grenfell is
getting into a rather dangerous
condition again. I gather that
he has been writing to Mahaffy
& perhaps to you also about
a proposed lecture in Dublin,
so it will perhaps be well for
me to give you a hint of how
things are. He was very active
(quite unnecessarily) at the recent

Congress for the History of religions1
here, and is now in an abnormally
excited & overwrought state of
mind, full of all sorts of schemes,
some of a very impracticable nature.
He is just at the opposite pole
to the one at which you have
seen him sometimes; the two
things seem to alternate, first excite-
ment & thisen depression.
It is of course possible, as I trust
will be the case, that the present
fit will pass off without coming
to a crisis. But I should say
that it would be well to temporise

with regard to any lecturing
arrangements; in any case I
dont think these lectures do
him any good. So perhaps you
could manage to drop a discreet
word with Mahaffy or whoever
is to manage it. Beware to
avoid directing attention to the affair
so far as possible. I'll send
you a line later to say how
things are going. HeGr. is away
for a day or two now.
I hope you got Ptolemy:2 but
dont let him worry you.
